A custom built three metre condenser coil, craned in over a working hospital campus
The job
Routine maintenance found the condenser coil on an air cooled Trane chiller developing leak after leak, always where the pipework was rubbing against the steel vertical bracing across the coil. We welded and sealed several of them, but new leaks kept appearing somewhere else. At that point replacement was the only honest answer.
After a lot of measuring, checking and confirming, a custom condenser coil was designed and manufactured. Getting it in was the harder half. The chiller sits in the centre of the health campus, so the replacement went in on a 500 tonne crane with a reach of more than 40 metres, up and across multi storey buildings. We ran the lift, liaised with the site and handled the traffic movements.
The coil went in with 20mm of clearance either side. The job went off without an issue and the chiller was back running inside 24 hours.
